Kids are more likely to read if they have access to exciting books. As a teacher, I tried to provide fresh reading material to my students each night. Many kids have a home library, but they quickly get bored and uninterested in reading the same old books over and over.
Keeping kids stocked up with fun books can be expensive if you don’t know how to find affordable or free books for kids. You’re in luck. I happen to be a tightwad teacher and mom with a few tricks up my sleeve!
How to Find Affordable or Free Books for Kids
These affordable and free resources for kids’ books have been a life saver in my home and classroom.
Search yard sales and thrift stores for cheap books for kids.
Yard sales and thrift stores often have books for as little as a quarter each. As children grow up, moms purge their home libraries of “babyish” books to make room for more age appropriate reading material. Many times they will sell them for a very affordable price in a yard sale or donate them to their favorite charity thrift store. Sometimes they have a little wear and tear, but often you can score cheap books that look new!
Post a want ad for free books online at Craigslist.
This is another place you can find affordable or free books that other moms are cleaning out of their kids’ home library. Search through the “free” listings or create your own post in the “wanted” section requesting gently used books. Be patient and wait for the right price. Free is best, but affordable used books are nearly as wonderful.
Shop for cheap books for kids on Amazon.
Amazon is a great place to find gently used books for kids. They won’t be free, but Amazon is the place to look for a specific book that you need for your child’s home collection. When shopping for books on Amazon, make sure you look at all your options for the best deal. Often you can choose between paperbacks, hard covers, new and used books to find the most affordable option.
Visit a free digital library.
You don’t even have to get dressed for this one. There are free books for kids available online!
Visit your public library’s free digital collection.
Most public libraries have great websites for families. Visit your library’s website to download free ebooks for your kids. You will probably need to enter your library card number, so make sure you have it ready.
Visit the International Children’s Digital Library.
This online library is a treasure trove of free books for kids. There are many languages, genres, and age levels available. The digital library has an easy search tool that is a fun learning activity in itself. Kids click on their preferred criteria and a list of books are sorted out according to their interests.
Many of the kids books at ICDL are rare. My students especially enjoyed using the search tool to find unique books they hadn’t seen before.
Finding affordable or free books for kids is easy when you know where to look for gently used books, good deals, or digital libraries. I hope your family enjoys these great resources and finds lots of great books for kids to add to their home library or online reading list.
